Now, given the scope of the game, much of the cultivation should be automatic and hands-off, but at the very least the macro model should reflect the nature of espionage during WW2, which to my mind the production-based approach of HoI3 didn't do very well. It's also more a case of cultivating contacts, rather than a James-bond style 'see who can kill the others' agents quicker' (agents were killed, but HoI3 felt like it overstated the rate of agent attrition, in no small part because its approach to espionage was production rather than cultivation based). I guess where I'm coming from is that from my understanding of spy networks (I've read a couple of books, mainly early cold war stuff though) is that it's less a case of throwing lots of money at it (money helps, but it's not everything), but also a question of quality people and where they're used. Better I open a new thread fully explaining my toughts.Įdit: I'm too lazy now, let's wait for the espionage DD. (Still the micromanagment options should stay, but as an ability not a necessity.)Īhhh, I have so much I want to say. I would even go so far and would say that it would be enough to just set how much effort I want to put into counter-espionage, espionage in countries at war with, espionage in neighbors, espionage in xyz and than the rest get automatically assigned without me having to switch every time I have a new neighbor, new war, etc. Short: I still hope the espionage feature, no matter how it may look, is a macro feature. I don't know how you would represent it in another way? So in your example UK would have to put most of its effort on counter-espionage or othwerwise they don't have it.Ĭountry A - sets focus on espionage in Country BĬountry B - sets focus on counter-espionageĮffort ("production") of A vs effort ("production") of B They had to equally effort to counter espionage so it is a matter of who can put more effort (therfore abstracted in "production") into espionage or countering it.Ĭountries don't have a trait of "great counter-espionage", they put money and effort in and if not they will have poor counter-espionage. Countries don't just decide: "Hey, we want to be espionage proof." -> *magic* -> espionage proof Which in this game would mean you "outproduce" your enemy. I talk about beeing able to set my efforts strategically and than forget about it until I want to change my focus, not checking the screen once in a while and clicking 3 times to replace soemthing that could easily be replaced by auto-replenish.Īnd what you say is the counter-espionage effort of those countries was high. Click to expand.I don't talk about what should be returned and what effects counter-espionage would have on your espionage efforts.
